Sometimes

IMG_25501-300x300This is a song that just wouldn’t have been written without using computers… It started with a modest drum loop – a verse and a pre chorus idea. I remember Steve Gregoire came over one day to do some writing. I played him what I had so far of the song and then we proceeded to dig in.

This was probably the most manic stream of consciousness writing session we had on the whole album… it was also the moment I really learned how incredible Steve’s ear is. We’d play what we had so far – stop the track… then on the spot I’d hum a melody for the next section. He’d instantly figure it out on the guitar and would orchestrate the entire section around it. I think it’s this writing arrangement that broke the song wide open in its scope and ambition.

Lyrically it came from a lot of the frustration we had in dealing with distractions and dissapointments. It’s about avoiding the easy path of negativity despite feeling let down and pushing through no matter what.

Recording wise we ended up with over 100 tracks of instrumentation and voices that you will hear on this… the big epic ending of  the song features many of our friends lending their voice.IMG_33771-300x300
