Staring At Your Phone

IMG_91101If I had known this song was going to end up on the album it probably would have taken a totally different direction early on. Coops and I were having as many writing sessions as possible around the time this was written. For this one he had come over to my place and it really started out as an experiment. We had wanted to push the tempo and attempt to write a song that was faster than any of the others we were writing.

One thing that’s pretty consistent when we write is we have a mic set up and as melodies pop in my head I just sing nonsense words to save those melody ideas for later reference. The thing about this song is that most of those original melodies and nonsense words ended up working so well they stayed.

A few days after we finished writing the music I was listening back to the song to see what we had, and within 15 minutes all the lyrics were written and I was already laying a scrap vocal track. I assumed the song was too “poppy” for man on earth so I didn’t over think it, I just had fun writing the words thinking it would be funny to play for my girlfriend when she got home. She would constantly be staring at her phone and tuning me out so this was sort of an artistic cry for help.

It wasn’t until we started jamming the song as a band that it really became apparent this was a man on earth tune after all. We started playing this one in our live shows almost immediately and that live experience really helped round out the feel and mood when we went in to record.

We made a few arrangement changes last minute that really pulled it together. In the end, I’m personally glad we didn’t over think this one and let it be the fun pop song it turned into naturally.IMG_3133
